Post Adoption Resources for Adult Adoptees

Adoption is a lifelong journey.

At Boston Post Adoption Resources, we believe that adoption is a lifelong journey. As an adult adoptee, you may feel isolated and alone at times, or like you are struggling to understand your needs and feelings. Milestones and significant life events may bring adoption-related themes to the surface for you, and BPAR provides support and help from adoption competent therapists who understand the unique issues that may arise. We use a strength-based approach to therapy in order to provide a safe place for you to explore your feelings and gain control of your life and relationships. If you are searching for or planning a reunion with a birth parent, we provide support and guidance throughout this process. Adult adoptees often feel alone and isolated, and BPAR recognizes the importance of connecting with other adoptees. Adults who are interested can join our adult adoptee group to share questions and feelings about life as an adoptee.

Clinical Services for Adult Adoptees

What therapeutic services does BPAR offer and how can adult adoptees benefit?

Individual Therapy:  Our clinicians at BPAR are adoption-informed and will take time to hear your story and meet your needs.

Family Therapy: Our family therapy model consists of meeting with entire families. We can provide space to build communication and strengthen your family relationships.

Adult Adoptee Peer Support Groups:  Our adult adoptee groups are exclusively for adult adoptees. Most groups meet monthly and all adult adoptees are welcome no matter where they are on their journeys.

Search & Reunion Support: If you are looking for answers regarding your biological family, we can support the birth family search process in a safe and contained way. We also provide recommendations and help prepare you as you make plans for a reunion.

Voices Unheard: A Reflective Journal for Adult Adoptees

This 52-week writing journal, published by BPAR in 2022 and written by our clinician Lisa Coppola, LMHC, offers prompts based on core themes that arise in therapy, space for writing, resources including a glossary, and guidelines plus a script to help volunteer moderators run peer groups.

An adult adoptee and mental health counselor, Lisa's earliest memories include adoption support group meetings in her home.

Adoptees in 3: Connecting Mind, Heart, and Action Video Interview Series

In each episode of BPAR's "Adoptees in 3: Connecting Mind, Heart, and Action" series, a clinician/adoptee asks an adoptee guest three enlightening questions about the current state of their adoptee journey and how it’s sitting in their mind, heart, and giving new purpose or meaning to their life.

Our hope is that these stories can impact the adoption community and start to open the doors of deeper consciousness for adoptees, as well as your family, friends, partners and therapists!

Voices Unheard: Real Adopteee Stories

From 2019 to 2024, BPAR hosted five Voices Unheard: Real Adoptee Stories events, public forums of storytelling by adult adoptees and those relinquished or removed from their biological families. We developed the forum because of our deep belief in the value of community and creative expression for adult adoptees. So often the adoption narratives we hear are created by those who have not experienced relinquishment and the resulting stories are simplified, and adoptee losses are often minimized.

All speakers at these events participated because they made a brave decision to share their experiences with the community. Watch the introduction below to learn more, then visit the 2024 Voices Unheard Forum page If you'd like to watch all the individual adult adoptee speakers.

Introduction to Voices Unheard: Real Adoptee Stories Forum, November 19, 2024

Lisa ‘LC” Coppola, LMHC, an adoptee,
discusses what is "adoption fog?" and talks about the pros of discomfort,
and how loved ones can best support adoptees.
