Child and Adolescent Groups

Expressive Therapies Group: Expressive therapies (drama, music, art, expressive, dance) offer young individuals a valuable avenue to explore their inner worlds and convey themselves creatively, without the need for verbal communication. These approaches provide a non-intimidating and indirect means of expression, alleviating any pressures that may arise during therapy sessions, which can sometimes be intimidating or overwhelming.
Dance Movement Therapies Group (DMT specialized): Dance movement therapy benefits adoptee children by providing a creative and non-verbal way to express themselves physically and emotionally. It helps them examine feelings, build self-confidence, and cope with past traumas and identity issues, ultimately supporting their emotional well-being.
Play Therapy Group: Play therapy helps adopted children by providing a safe and non-threatening space to express their feelings and work through adoption-related issues at their own speed. With the guidance of a trained therapist, they can build trust, improve communication, process complex emotions, and develop coping skills, enhancing their emotional well-being and adjustment.
Self-Care Teen Group (age 13-15): This experiential group will offer teen members an opportunity to explore various methods of self-care through expressive therapies, mindfulness, embodied practices, and cognitive behavioral therapy. Group members will learn and practice various self-care practices with other teen adoptees and identify ways in which they may use these skills in their lives.
Older Teen Group (age 16-18): This group offers a chance for adoptee children to connect with peers who share similar adoption experiences, reducing feelings of isolation and cultivating a supportive community. During the challenging teenage years, the group provides a safe space for teens to openly discuss identity, culture, and heritage, aiding their self-discovery journey. Additionally, it can help increase their self-esteem and provides a vital source of emotional support during adolescence.

Adult Adoptee Groups

Young Adult Adoptees: This group for young adult adoptees (ages 18-25) is designed to provide a safe space for peer support, exploring topics and issues of racial trauma, adoption, search reunion, transitioning, separation, identity, and adjusting to changes entering adulthood.
International Adoptees: This group is designed for internationally adopted young adults (18-25) to explore the unique and complex factors related to international adoption including split identity, ethnicity, race, language, etc. The goal of this group would be to promote self-exploration and processing in relationship to one’s status as an international adoptee.
DNA Discovery Group: Non-Paternity Event (NPE), New Siblings, Family Secrets: This closed group for adult adoptees (age 18+) provides a supportive space for members to process new information learned from DNA testing regarding family members or family secrets.
Parenting as an Adoptee (for biological, adoptive, or step parents): This group is designed as a support space for adult adoptees (18+) who have become parents themselves– whether through having their own biological children, through adopting, or through becoming a step-parent. Parenting can bring up a lot of emotions or questions for adoptees and this would be a space to explore, share, and process this experience.
Grief, Loss, and Bereavement: This grief, loss, and bereavement group for adoptee adults aims to create a space that recognizes complex adoption-related feelings of loss or actual losses, offers a secure space for emotional processing, provides support for identity and origin questions in adulthood, fosters connections by bringing together adoptees with shared experiences to cope with adoption-related grief and loss.
Dance Movement Therapies Group for Adult Adoptees: Dance movement therapy provides a creative and non-verbal way to express oneself physically and emotionally. This group would be designed to engage adult adoptees in creative and exploratory movements around self-discovery, self esteem and confidence, trauma, and identity.

Groups for Parents, Caregivers, and Partners of Adoptees

Please select all groups that you are interested in for yourself or for a family member.

Anti-Racist Parenting for Transracial Adoptive Parents: A learning and support group for parents who have adopted transracially to expand their racial literacy and to discuss issues as they relate to race, racism, anti-racism, and transracial adoption. The group will meet biweekly for six sessions and it will be structured with pre-work and activities. Attendance commitment for the series of sessions is required. A 15-minute phone chat with each participant is required prior to joining the group to assess learning needs.
Partners of Adoptees: Many adult adoptees struggle with issues such as trust and attachment. As a result, being partnered with an adoptee can be challenging and confusing at times. This is a support group for adult non-adopted partners of adoptees to find peer support and develop a trauma and attachment lens for understanding one’s adopted partner.
Parenting Groups: Parenting support groups, typically grouped by age of child, provide a safe space for parents and caregivers of an adopted child, adolescent, or adult to meet others and share their stories and experiences. Group members will be invited to discuss all aspects of parenting—the challenges, joys, frustrations, and successes.
